In 1941, Tata Memorial Hospital was originally started by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. In 1952 a basic cancer institute emerged by the name Cancer Research Institute (CRI). It was taken over by Ministry of Health in 1957 which was later named as Tata Memorial Hospital. The Tata Memorial Hospital was the first Centre in the country to initiate Bone Marrow Transplant in 1983. This specialist cancer facility is located in Mumbai where it is visited by around 43,000 new patients from all around the world every year. Over 60% among them are cancer patients who receive primary care at the hospital out of which over 70% get treatments absolutely free. Records say beyond 1000 patients have visited the OPD receiving medical help, complete care or for follow-up treatment. The comprehensive cancer treatment program includes prevention, early diagnosis, rehabilitation therapy & terminal care. Close to 6000+ major operations are conducted annually & many of these cases are also planned out with Radiotherapy & Chemotherapy in multi-disciplinary programs delivering established treatments.

Over the years, many advance technologies & techniques were introduced such as ultrasound, CT Scanners, MRI & more dynamic real time nuclear medicine scanning including the PET scan. The “first in India” PET CT scanner is also available here along with various radiological imaging techniques for cancer management. Tata Memorial Hospital is one of the best training institutes in India & is recognized by reputed international organizations like the WHO, IAEA & UICC. The research center located here is totally dedicated to clinical research on cancer. The hospital has all cancer-related facilities like 2 OTs, 1 endoscopy theatre, 6 ICU beds,7-bed BMT unit & fully equipped radiology, pathology, microbiology, transfusion medicine & anesthesia services. At ACTREC the radiotherapy unit is equipped with dual-energy linear accelerator, IMRT, stereotactic therapy & HDU-brachytherapy units.
