Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery

Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery IndiaWhat is Deep Brain Stimulation ?

Parkinson’s disease has symptoms like tremor, stiffness, reduced or slow movement and walking problems. Deep Brain Stimulation treatment is used to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s as well as various other neurological disorders. In Deep Brain Stimulation, electrodes are implanted in certain spots on the head and electrical impulses are applied to these areas with a wire that travels under the skin. The stimulation or pulses can be controlled by a pacemaker or neurostimulator, which is placed in the upper chest. These impulses affect the cells and chemicals in the brain, which may reduce the symptoms.

 DBS Surgical Procedure:

  1. Before Surgery

The patient needs to undergo a few medical tests to make sure DBS is safe and a good option. Certain brain imaging studies like MRI, map the areas of the brain and help to identify the sections where the electrodes can be placed.

  1. During Surgery

During the procedure, the medical team will fit a special stereotactic head frame to limit the head movement. MRI is done to trace the brain and the electrodes are placed in the head area. Before surgery, a local anesthesia is given in the head to numb the scalp. As there are no pain receptors in the region, anesthetia is not administered.

A thin lead wire is implanted with 4 electrodes at the tips of certain areas of the brain. This wire passes to a neurostimulator, which is kept near the collarbone. The patient is awake during the whole process and the neurologists asks questions to make sure the right areas of the brain are being stimulated. The patient’s responses help the medical team to control the electric signals. The neurologist and surgeon will keep a check on the electrode placement and the brain during the entire process.

The second part is the chest wall surgery, in which under the general anesthesia a part of the device that contain batteries is implanted just below the patient’s skin near the collarbone. The wires are directed to the battery-operated pulse generator which is programmed to send continuous electrical pulses to the brain. The patient can control the generator by switching it on and off using the remote control.

  1. After Surgery

To lower the risk of infection, the doctor prescribes antibiotics, and the pulse generator in the chest is activated in the doctor’s clinic for a few weeks. In some cases, stimulation may be constant or as per sessions, i.e. in the morning or evening or night. The patient should remain in continuous touch with the surgeon for the treatment.

Use of stimulator

A stimulator which is called Neurostimlator is about the size of a stopwatch that delivers mild electrical signals to the epidural space near the spine through a thin wire (lead). The electric signals that are produced cause a tingling sensation in the spot of chronic pain.

Success Rate Of DBS

Deep brain stimulation may help in lessening the symptoms of neurological disorders, but it doesn’t cure the disease. The symptoms may improve significantly if this treatment works properly. Doctors give deep brain stimulation treatment and medicines parallelly for certain conditions. The Neurosurgeons in India are highly skilled and have immense experience in DBS so the treatment results are very positive.
