LASIK Eye Surgery In India

Refractive surgery is the procedure which is used to correct the common problems with vision which reduces your dependence on glasses or contact lenses. The most popular refractive surgery nowadays is called Lasik surgery which is essentially a laser procedure. Lasik is laser assisted in situ keratomileusis and is most commonly used to treat myopia – nearsightedness, astigmatism and hyperopia – farsightedness. In this surgery the cornea is reshaped to allow the light to enter the eye in such a way that it gets focused properly on the retina providing clear vision. In most cases this is a painless operation which takes about 15 minutes to complete for both eyes and the results become evident in 24 hours.

Lasik Eye Surgery

Am I Eligible for Lasik Surgery?

  • The first requisite is that you should be at least 18 years old and your eyes should be generally healthy which means that you should not have any eye disease or corneal abnormalities like infections or scars.
  • You should also be able to lie down flat without discomfort or difficulty because the surgery will be performed with you lying down.
  • You should be able to keep your eyes focused accurately on a single point for one or two minutes. Although the lasers nowadays are able to work with moving eyes, but it is best for the patient to stare at a single point to ensure best results.
  • You will have to stop wearing contact lenses for two to four weeks before the procedure because lenses can change the cornea shape.
  • You should also be willing to sign an informed consent form which is provided by the surgeon. This is to ensure that you understand the procedure and are aware of the potential risks.

Before Surgery Tips

  • A complete eye examination during which you need to discuss your present and past medical and eye conditions which includes any earlier surgeries or trauma. Also discuss all the medications you are taking which includes over the counter medicines.
  • Discuss the risk, benefits and alternatives of Lasik surgery with your doctor. The doctor will also inform you about what you need to do before, during and after the procedure.
  • Stop wearing contact lenses for two to four weeks before the surgery
  • Meet your surgeon a few days prior to the surgery so that you can get acclimatized to the idea
  • Avoid using all creams, lotions, or make up on the morning of the surgery
  • You will not be allowed to drive yourself, so you will have to arrange for transportation to and from the clinic.

Lasik Eye Surgery Procedure

  • First the technician will calibrate the laser machine
  • Some drops will be put into your eyes.
  • Then a small flap is created to lift the outside cornea layer with a ultra precisemicrokeratome
  • A vacuum ring is placed on the eye to prevent it from moving
  • Your vision will either dim or completely darken
  • Once the flap is created the vision will come back
  • The flap is lifted to expose the mid layer of the cornea which will be treated with the laser
  • When one eye is being treated the other will be patched
  • Once the Lasik procedure is completed the cornea flap will be replaced and rinsed with liquid
  • The flap is allowed to reattach to the surface of the eye in about 30-60 seconds.

After Surgery Tips

Your eyes may itch or burn a little immediately after the Lasik surgery and you may be given a mild pain killer to relieve the pain if any. Vision after Lasik surgery is usually blurred or hazy, but do not rub the eyes as this may dislodge the flap. Your eyes may be sensitive to glare, lights, star bursts or haloes around lights. These symptoms will gradually subside within a few days and it is advisable to take a few days off work to recover from the procedure. If you experience severe pain or discomfort you should not wait for the scheduled appointment and immediately visit the doctor. Make it a point to visit the doctor within 24 to 48 hours of the surgery and for six months at regular intervals. You will have to use eye drops prescribed by the doctor to prevent infections and inflammation. Do not start wearing contact lens in the treated eye even if you experience blurred vision. Abstaining from contact sports may be advised by the doctor and for two weeks after the surgery avoid using any creams, lotions or make up around the eyes.
