How is Lung Transplantation Procedure done?

An anesthesiologist will provide general anesthesia and after that:

  • A central venous catheter is put into a vein in the groin or the throat. With the help of this catheter it is possible to deliver fluids like antibiotics, nutritious solutions or blood products into the blood without having to frequently insert a needle in the vein
  • In order to help the patient breathe a tube is placed in the mouth that goes down the throat and into the windpipe. A ventilator is attached to this tube which will expand the lungs mechanically.
  • The patient is placed on a heart/lung machine which will allow the surgeons to bypass the flow of the blood to the lungs and heart. The machine removes the carbon dioxide from the body and replaces it with oxygen by pumping the blood through the body.
  • A nasogastric tube is put through the nose into the stomach which drains the secretions from the stomach.
  • A catheter is also placed in the bladder to drain the urine
  • The lung is removed carefully and replaced with the donor lung
