Types of Rhinoplasty

Reduction Rhinoplasty

In reduction rhinoplasty, areas of the nose like the bump on the bridge of the nose, excessive width of the bridge tip and excessive width of the nostrils are reshaped and corrected. These areas if disproportionate with the facial features, can cause a concern among patients and rhinoplasty can make a perfect transformation.

Augmentation Rhinoplasty

This type of surgery involves augmentation (increasing) the dimension of the nose. If a nose is under developed in case of congenital or the support cartilage of the nose is injured due to sports/accidents, then the surgeon will insert a cartilage graft within the nose and give a perfect shape to the nose.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Ethnic rhinoplasty is associated with the ethnic groups such as Afro-Caribbean, the Far Eastern or Pacific Rim populations. This surgery is considered, to correct or to give ethnic characteristics to the person’s nose in terms of shape, skin and the proportions.

Post-traumatic Rhinoplasty

Nose shape can get distorted due to injuries or any unknown trauma. Accidents may lead to damage to the cartilage and bone support which changes the appearance of the nose. To correct deviations, asymmetries, and airway problems Post-traumatic rhinoplasty is done. The success rate of Rhinoplasty is relatively good and the person recovers within the a week to 10 days.

Secondary rhinoplasty

Secondary rhinoplasty involves revision of failed/ prior rhinoplasty. It includes correcting and reshaping the nose, which was fractured or got a defective nose tip such as pinched, hooked or flattened in the previous surgery. Airway restoration is also done in this procedure.

Ideal candidate for Rhinoplasty

If the person’s nose is too big or small, is crooked, bent, distorted due to an accident or trauma, very out of proportion nose, very large and flared nostrils, or very thin or small nose or nostrils, have medical complaints like chronic sinus, then the patient he/she is an ideal candidate for rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty is done on an outpatient basis. It is performed under general or local anesthesia, where the surgeon makes incisions within the nostrils. The surgeon may also make incisions across the base of the nose, he then reshapes the cartilage & inner bone and gives the nose a more pleasing appearance. After the surgery, the patient has to wear the nasal splint for the 1st week. Some swelling and bruising around the eyes is also expected. Later, after the 3rd day, the discomfort lessens , but the pain may last for around 15 days. The swelling gradually decreases and the wound is completely healed within 6 months. It is recommended to see the doctor regularly for check ups. After 6-7 months the final shape of the nose will be apparent. Any strenuous activity for 4 to 6 weeks after the surgery should be avoided. The patient may return to the daily activities within two to three weeks. After the surgery, there are no noticeable signs or marks of the procedure.
