What is a Root Canal?

Infection or damage of tooth occurs in case of a cracked tooth, tooth injury, repetitive dental treatment or a deep cavity. In such a scenario, a treatment or repair is required to extract the infected or damaged tooth. This procedure of repairing or treating the tooth is known as root canal. The entire process undergoes a series of steps starting from preparing for extraction, removing the infected tooth, cleaning, disinfecting the area, filling the gap and then sealing the created empty space.

Types of Root Canal Treatment

There are various types of root canal treatments but each depends on the extent of damaged tooth and on how worst the infection is. Some of the known types include:

  • Nonsurgical: There is a non surgical method of root canal treatment that is performed so as to manage gum infection.
  • Apicoectomy: This is a micro-surgical method that is performed in order to remove the root or tissue tip of the infected tooth.
  • Pulpotomy: In this procedure only the pulp is removed from the tooth crown without touching the root of the tooth. This is mainly performed on children.
  • Pulpectomy: This is a surgical method wherein all the infected pulp and damaged nerve is removed from the tooth.

How is Root Canal Therapy Done?

Root canal therapy includes several thoughtful and defined steps depending on the condition of the tooth. These steps include:

  • The very first step is to take an X ray and get a clear idea of where exactly the infection is and how deep.
  • Then an opening is made in the tooth from the back or the crown area of the infected or damaged tooth.
  • Then depending on the type of root canal required, pulp, damaged nerve or tissue is removed. If surgery is not required then a non surgical method is performed to clean the area and fill the area.
  • After the pulp is removed then the entire area is well cleaned and shaped into a perfect fit for filling.
  • At times it requires more than one sitting and in such a scenario a temporary filling is done to protect the crown opening of the extracted tooth from further infection.
  • In the second sitting then the temporary filling is removed and the tooth is filled permanently with a rubbery material known as gutta percha.
  • Thereafter the filling is sealed with cement and then a natural shape of the tooth is given before placing the crown into place.

Pain after Root Canal

There is no such pain after a root canal is done. Mainly the infection or damage that occurs in the tooth cause lot of pain and uneasiness but the procedure does not leave any pain behind. It is mainly done under the effect of local anesthetic that numbs the infected tooth and the surrounding area as well. This keeps no space for pain during the process and even after the treatment for some time the impact of anesthetic stays on. Once the procedure is over there is no feeling of pain but yes some sort of discomfort would be there because some new objects are placed within. This may not cause uneasiness but for a few days some people may feel discomfort.
