Successful Squint Eye Correction Surgery in India

Squaint Eye Surgery In IndiaAlso known as Strabismus Surgery, Extraocular Muscle Surgery, Eye Alignment Surgery or Eye Muscle Surgery, Squint Eye Correction Surgery is performed on the extra-ocular muscles so as to correct misalignment of eyes. Approximately, about 1.2 million strabismus surgery procedures are performed each year for correcting squint eyes. This eye alignment surgery is also the third most common eye procedure performed in the United States.

Surgical Intervention for Squint Eye

Surgery may often be needed to correct squint eye in people especially when other treatments have proved unsuccessful. Squint eye surgery may be effectively used to improve alignment of eyes including appearance & which will eventually help them work together.

Squint Eye Correction Surgery Procedure

Surgical intervention in this procedure involves moving muscles attached to outside of eyes into a new position. This may often be necessary to operate on both eyes so as to balance even if squint is present only in one eye. This surgery which takes less than an hour’s time to complete is usually carried out under the influence of general anesthesia. It is typically an outpatient procedure where patients can go back home the same day. While a nurse will be with the patient throughout the surgical procedure, parents are also allowed to accompany child patient to operation theaterso as to stay with them until anesthesia is administered. The eye is kept open during the operation with the help of an instrument called lid speculum. Ophthalmologist or eye surgeon will subsequently detach one part of the muscle connecting to the eye so as to move it backward or weaken the pulling effect or shorten it in size in order to increase the pulling effect of this eye muscle. Once this correction has been made, muscles are then sewn back in place with the help of dissolvable stitches.

Risks Associated With Squint Eye Correction Surgery

Like with any other surgical intervention, risks associated with strabismus surgery are also present. It would therefore be sensible for patients to discuss possible risks of squint eye correction surgery with ophthalmologists prior to going in for an operation.

Risks involved with strabismus surgery are listed below.

  • Second surgery may be needed sometimes in case squint eye in patient is severe.
  • Eyes may remain red for a long time following squint eye correction operation. Although this is rare, it may be caused due to formation of scar tissue on surface of the eye.
  • Double vision may also occur at times after squint eye correction operation but will usually resolve without any intervention within a week or two.
  • Squint may also recur at times or strabismus operation may be required to be repeated for some other reason.
  • Inside of the eye may be damaged during the surgical procedure in rare cases.
  • Developing an infection following surgical intervention is possible with any type of surgery.

Squint Eye Correction Surgery Complications

Studies have estimated that one in five people undergoing operation for successfully treating squint eye in adults will require more than one attempt to be fruitful. Problem of double vision is however found to occur in less than one in 100 patients. Moreover, double vision is usually found to either improve with time or can be successfully treated with further surgery. It is commonly found to require another operation so as to completely correct squint in children. It is particularly so when the first operation was performed in children at a very young age. Few studies have revealed, that 6 out of 10 child-patients who have undergone strabismus surgery at about one year of age, will subsequently need to undergo another operation for squint eye at some other point of time. Although other complications among children are generally rare, it would be sensible of parents to ask ophthalmologists for more information on this subject.

Recovering From Squint Eye Correction Surgery

Strabismus surgery patients can take several weeks so as to fully recover. Eyes are most likely to be sore for some days following squint eye correction surgery. Resulting pain is generally treated using simple painkillers like paracetemol. However, children under the age of 16 should never be given aspirin. Consult the eye surgeon in case pain does not improve following squint eye correction surgery. Pad may usually be put over the affected eye following strabismus surgery, which will normally be removed before discharge from the hospital. It is also not required that squint eye correction surgery patients should wear a bandage or patch at home. They can also return to daily normal activities including reading as soon as they feel able to. General aim following this eye surgery is to get eyes working normally as early as possible.

Aftercare at Home Following Squint Eye Correction Surgery

Members of the surgical team would provide specific advice for squint eye correction surgery patients to follow after returning home post an eye operation. General tips regarding aftercare at home following strabismus surgery include the following.

  • Drink plenty of water at regular intervals.
  • Stitches at incision site may take up to 6 weeks to completely dissolve. They may make patients feel like a bit of grit in the eye alongside itching; but they should not be rubbed.
  • Avoid washing hair for a few days & make sure not to get any shampoo or soap in eye.
  • Child patients should not play in sand or use face paint for at least 2 weeks following squint eye correction surgery.
  • Scheduled follow-up visits are necessary with eye specialists after squint eye correction surgery.
  • In case glasses were needed prior to squint-eye correction surgery prior to operation, they will most probably be required to be worn following the procedure as well.
